When historians look back on this era of the NBA from roughly 2010 to 2025, the two names that will be thought of most are Stephen Curry and LeBron James. They faced each other in the NBA Finals four consecutive seasons and are the two most recognizable stars in the game.
Yet in many ways they couldn’t be more different, even though there is very clearly a respect and admiration for one another that seems very genuine.
Stephen Curry's loyalty to Warriors is truly rare in today's NBA
LeBron has been with four different teams in his career: the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, and now the Philadelphia 76ers after Golden State pursued him this offseason. He’s won rings everywhere he’s been so far and deserves credit for going back to the Cavs after leaving, but he's definitely not been loyal to one franchise the way Curry has been.
Curry was recently asked about whether the idea of free agency appealed to him after seeing James go through it, with the two-time MVP shutting down the idea of departing the Warriors next offseason.
“Not at all. I’ve always stated that I want to be a lifer with Golden State," Curry said.
That’s not a surprising answer by any stretch because Curry always has said that he wants to spend his whole career with the Warriors. He is an incredibly loyal person and it’s admirable that he wants to spend his whole career with one franchise, something that is exceedingly rare in pro sports generally but especially in this era of the NBA which will also be remembered for stars like James and Kevin Durant hopping from team to team.
It just shows how Curry and James are different. James obviously isn’t without loyalty as evidenced by going back to Cleveland, but his loyalty doesn’t last forever and he is not afraid to depart if he feels the pastures are greener elsewhere. Curry seems content to see things through with the Warriors, whether that means the team slowly becomes more irrelevant over the years or whether they make one more miraculous playoff run.
That’s just who he is and the Warriors have to feel incredibly lucky that they drafted not only such an incredible athlete, the best shooter of all time, but also such a loyal person who is willing to see things through until the end rather than trying to chase another ring in the final years of his career like James.
