The Golden State Warriors moved to further solidify their preseason roster on Wednesday, signing Australian forward Alex Toohey to a training camp contract after selecting him 52nd overall at last year’s NBA Draft.
The signing spells immediate trouble for current two-way contracted forward Malevy Leons, with reports already emerging that Toohey could retake his two-way contract with a positive impression in training camp, during preseason and/or in the G League.

The 22-year-old was waived by Golden State last December after suffering a season-ending knee injury, paving the way for the addition of Leons who joined the franchise as Toohey’s replacement on a two-way contract.
Leons has since been with the Warriors, seeing rotation opportunity late last season during the team’s injury crisis. The former Thunder forward averaged 3.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and nearly an assist per game, before playing a big role in Golden State’s Summer League championship in July.
However, Leons’ two-way spot could be in jeopardy depending on what happens during training camp and preseason, with ESPN’s Olgun Uluc reporting on Wednesday that Toohey could work his way back onto a two-way contract.
“Warriors are pleased with how he's worked his way back and wanted to make sure he stayed within the franchise. The feel is, once he gets his feet back under him, Toohey could potentially work his way back to a two-way contract again,” Uluc wrote.

Warriors will likely have to decide between Malevy Leons and Alex Toohey
Golden State do have an available two-way spot to theoretically have both Leons and Toohey on the roster, but they’re similarities in skillset and position suggest they’ll likely only opt with one or the other.
The Warriors have LJ Cryer seemingly locked into a two-way deal as a promising young point guard who could see legitimate rotation minutes this season. Given the age and injury-prone nature of veteran duo Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford, it would make sense to have a big man like Graham Ike who impressed in summer league and who could provide insurance at the center position.
That would leave one two-way spot for the incumbent in Leons or the returning Toohey. The latter is four years younger which could work in his favor if the Warriors want to go down the development route, but Leons is far closer to making an immediate on-court impact which the franchise may prefer given the current long-term injuries to wing pair Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody.
