The Golden State Warriors may not be involved in Peyton Watson's move to the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of a major five-team trade on Wednesday, but they may be quiet winners regardless given their projected cap space next summer.
The Warriors will undoubtedly have an eye on the future of Nikola Jokic, with the Denver Nuggets certainly taking a risk by trading Watson for only one future first-round pick and seemingly no short-term benefits to help their three-time MVP and the rest of the roster.
Nuggets and Cavaliers take a risk with Peyton Watson trade
As first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania on Wednesday, the Cavaliers are acquiring Watson on a four-year, $88 million contract in a sign-and-trade that sends Max Strus to the L.A. Clippers. The Nuggets are getting Cleveland's 2031 first-round pick and a second-round pick tied to the Sacramento Kings.
It's also a risky move for Cleveland given Watson really only broke out this past season, averaging 14.6 points and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 41.1% from 3-point range in 54 games. However, the boldness from the Cavaliers front office is commendable after joining the Warriors in missing out on superstar forward LeBron James earlier in free agency.
BREAKING: Cleveland, Denver and the Clippers have agreed on a trade sending Peyton Watson to the Cavaliers, Max Strus to LA, and an unprotected 2031 Cavs first-round pick and a 2032 Kings second-rounder to the Nuggets, sources tell ESPN.

It does put a further spotlight on the Nuggets who weren't willing to go further into the second apron to retain Watson. They were willing, however, to offer a four-year, $70 million deal according to The Athletic's Sam Amick last week, making it intriguing that they weren't willing to match the extra $18 million across four years that the 23-year-old has now landed with the Cavaliers.
Denver are instead pivoting towards veteran wing DeMar DeRozan according to NBA insider Chris Haynes in the aftermath of the Watson sign-and-trade, but a number of contenders remain in pursuit of the six-time All-Star who remains unsigned.
Warriors are already quiet winners from Peyton Watson trade
Not only is this move seemingly a step back for a direct conference rival who the Warriors will see three times this season, but it places further intrigue on Jokic's future if the Nuggets can't respond from their first-round playoff exit this year.
Nuggets trading one of their best players for a pick 5 years out while Jokic is in his prime feels like a bad decision unless something comes next

Golden State project to have max cap space next summer when Jokic could opt out of his player option and hit free agency, with veteran forward Draymond Green already hinting at his team's potential pursuit of the Serbian superstar.
The Warriors will need everything to go right for Jokic to even consider a future outside of Denver next offseason, but this underwhelming return for Watson feels like a good starting point.
