Fan morale is not especially high for the Golden State Warriors right now. For many, it feels like the team is just stuck in neutral and the fact they’re basically just running things back after last year’s disappointment has left many despondent.
That’s an understandable way to look at things, but this is the offseason. It’s the time to be positive and dream just a little bit before the regular season crushes everyone’s hopes.
In all seriousness, there is reason for optimism with the Warriors going into next season and one doesn’t even have to squint all that hard to see it.
While the Kristaps Porzingis trade may not seem like it was that big of a move especially since he was unavailable for a good chunk of his time with the Warriors to date, the fact that they were able to re-sign the veteran center at least keeps him in the fold for this upcoming campaign.
That’s a very good thing because when Porzingis was healthy and on the court he played quite well for the Warriors. He averaged 16 points per game and shot 43% from the field and 31% from three-point range in the 15 games he played in.
Kristaps Porzingis and Stephen Curry could be dangerous together
It’s important to keep in mind that for many of those games, Stephen Curry was injured. After the Porzingis trade, there was a lot of talk about getting to see him and Curry on the floor together in order to make an informed decision about whether to bring the big man back.
That never really materialized, but it’s still not hard to see them being really effective on the floor together. Porzingis’ size will help with the Warriors spacing which should give Curry some better looks. Plus, the fact that he’s a threat at the rim will also make the Warriors less predictable and force teams to guard more than just the perimeter.
In turn, Curry being such a potent three-point threat should only open up opportunities for Porzingis to knock down some more threes and finish at the rim. The former All-Star isn't necessarily a sharpshooter by any stretch, but he makes enough of them to be dangerous.
Of course, it goes without saying that all of this is dependent on the health of both players. If one or both go down, that will mess up this potential dynamic duo. One can only hope they stay healthy so we can get an extended look at what we only saw briefly last season.
