So much of the Golden State Warriors season will hinge on not only when Jimmy Butler returns from injury, but how he looks and how well he plays as a 37-year-old coming off a torn ACL.
The news thus far is promising when it comes to Butler's rehabilitation, including a positive update with reports that the six-time All-Star is targeting a return on Christmas Day against the Denver Nuggets.

Speaking to 95.7 The Game's Willard and Dibs earlier in the month, Golden State insider Danny Emerman of the San Francisco Standard revealed Butler could be back on the floor this calendar year.
"I've heard that he's targeting as early as Christmas. Who knows how his rebab turns out, obviously that's something that's subject to change," Emerman said.
An earlier than expected Butler return gives the Warriors a ray of hope in what many, including seemingly the front office given their moves (or lack thereof) this summer, are identifying as a gap year with little hope of legitimate contention.
It's nigh on impossible to see Golden State elevating into the championship picture, but a Christmas Day Butler return allows enough runway for him to possibly be a fully healthy, very impactful player come the postseason. Perhaps the Warriors, armed with a host of veterans with immense playoff experience, become at least a sneaky threat and a team Western Conference rivals don't want to see in a seven-game series.
This is certainly a glass half full approach, but it's not totally out of the realms of possibility based on Emerman's comments and recent clips that have circulated of Butler back in the gym working out during the offseason.

Warriors will get extra benefit the earlier Jimmy Butler returns
Not only should an earlier Butler return help the Warriors on the court, but it would crucially give Mike Dunleavy Jr. and the front office more time to assess the state of the roster and where the team is headed before the mid-season trade deadline.
Butler himself could be a trade candidate, and a return this calendar year would give rivals over a month to evaluate his performances post-injury. Conversely, Butler might look good enough, and Golden State may be in strong enough of a position, that the front office seriously considers a big upgrade before the deadline with the thinking of being able to make noise come playoff time.
There are so many ramifications that will stem from Butler's return, but all of them will benefit from it coming earlier rather than later so long as he's comfortable and Rick Celebrini and the medical staff have ticked it off.
