Many Golden State Warriors fans are already pretty upset at the current state of the team. It’s understandable since they are going to run back largely the same group that had a disappointing season last year, particularly when stars they were linked to went elsewhere.
The franchise is seemingly heading in an unclear direction. With speculation over the future of Stephen Curry, it seems like the Warriors are at least soft launching the possibility of a rebuild based on general manager Mike Dunleavy’s recent clumsy comments about the two-time MVP.
"Look, if he comes to me and wants to be moved, (controlling owner) Joe (Lacob) and I will talk it through. We wouldn't love it. But he's earned the right to do what he wants," Dunleavy said of a potential Curry trade request on Tuesday.
Warriors seemingly lack a plan or cohesive direction
Dunleavy's right that Curry has earned the right to do what he wants at this point in his career, but to talk so openly about the possibility that he could request a trade is nothing short of bizarre. One would expect the GM to commit fully to ensuring that Curry retires with the Warriors and never plays with another team. The fact that he didn’t say that suggests the team really is open to trading him.
That would be such a sad and frustrating way for Curry’s dominant run with the Warriors to come to an end. He played in an era where there was more ring-chasing in the NBA than ever, and he stands out like a unicorn with the fact that he has remained loyal to one franchise over his entire career.
Some may even take that into consideration when discussing all-time greats someday, and it really is commendable that Curry has stuck with the Warriors through all of the good and the bad.
But Dunleavy’s clumsy comments just speak to the overall lack of direction for the franchise. There’s no real cohesive plan to point to. In one breath he'll say he envisions Curry staying with the Warriors, but in the next he'll state that they'll work with him should he request a trade.
One would hope for a little less wishy-washiness from the guy who is in charge of the team’s personnel, but perhaps this is what we should expect at this point from Dunleavy and the front office.
The Warriors feel a bit rudderless right now and stuck in place. There are no great options on the table because running it back isn’t all that exciting, yet breaking it all up doesn’t sound that much fun either.
Perhaps that’s why the Warriors are opting to play it safe for now. Whatever the plan is, it just leaves fans feeling a bit confused about the future of the team.
