The Golden State Warriors still haven't signed another point guard after losing Pat Spencer to the Phoenix Suns at the start of free agency, putting more pressure on 38-year-old Stephen Curry to remain healthy next season.
That could change in the coming days or weeks as the Warriors continue to eye former Mavericks guard Brandon Williams, with the franchise now linked to the 26-year-old on numerous occassions over the last month.
Warriors still eyeing Brandon Williams to solve Stephen Curry problem
The Warriors have two roster spots available and confirmed on Tuesday, via general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., that they'll fill out the positions before opening night. According to NBA insider Marc Stein on Tuesday night, Golden State are still looking at Williams and veteran forward Georges Niang.
"Free agents who I'm told are drawing legitimate interest from Golden State for the Warriors' open roster spots: Georges Niang and Brandon Williams," Stein reported.
Williams played in a career-high 66 games and made 15 starts with the Mavericks last season in the absence of star guard Kyrie Irving, but has clearly been discarded as new president Masai Ujiri and general manager Mike Schmitz revamp the roster around Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg.
The California native averaged 13.0 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 22.2 minutes per game, shooting 47.2% from the field but only 23.2% from 3-point range as more of a downhill driver who finishes well around the basket for his 6'1" size.
Dallas' decision to simply move on from Williams doesn't raise much optimism of Williams' ability to be a big contributor for Golden State, but the front office does nonetheless need to address their backup point guard situation behind Curry.
Warriors need more point guard depth beyond Stephen Curry
As the roster currently stands, any injury to Curry would leave the two-way contracted LJ Cryer as the only available point guard. It would force the likes of Brandin Podziemski and De'Anthony Melton into increased ball-handling and playmaking responsibilities as we saw late last season, the latter of which particularly struggled when Curry and Jimmy Butler were out.
Williams would at least fit solve one problem in that regard, giving Golden State another source of offense when Curry is off the floor and/or on the inevitable nights when the two-time MVP is out resting or injured.
Williams played three seasons in Dallas but played only 50 combined games in the first two years, while appearing in 24 games with the Portland Trail Blazers during his rookie season after going undrafted in 2021.
