The Golden State Warriors are seemingly planning on signing former Philadelphia 76ers wing Dalen Terry to a training camp contract, setting up a battle for the 15th roster spot which could also feature a host of other young and even veteran players.

With the Warriors almost assuredly going down this path, two more potential training camp options are about to become available after the Washington Wizards traded away youngsters Cam Whitmore and Julian Reese as part of Wednesday’s Peyton Watson sign-and-trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Wizards trade fallout gives Warriors two training camp options

As part of the five-team trade that also sent Max Strus to the L.A. Clippers, the Wizards sent out Whitmore and Reese while acquiring Tre Mann and a 2027 second-round pick. Reese has already been waived by the Denver Nuggets, while it’s expected Whitmore will also be quickly moved on by the Cavaliers.

Both players could be worth a flyer for the Warriors, particularly given they’re still eligible for two-way contracts as they enter their fourth and second seasons respectively. Golden State do have an open two-way spot alongside incumbents LJ Cryer and Malevy Leons.

Many Warrior fans wanted Whitmore when he sensationally slid from being a likely top 10 pick at the 2023 draft, but the front office correctly took Brandin Podziemski 19th overall before the Houston Rockets took Whitmore at 20.

The young forward hasn’t delivered on the obvious talent entering the league, averaging 10.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in 17.3 minutes on 45% shooting from the floor and 34.9% from 3-point range across his three years in Houston and Washington.

Reese, meanwhile, got extensive opportunity on a tanking Wizards team toward the end of last season, averaging 11.8 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals on 52.9% shooting from the floor in 13 games.

Warriors are in position to take a flyer on young talent

Seemingly comfortable in taking a gap year before projecting significant cap space next summer, the Warriors are in position to take this kind of swing on a young player or two to see if they can find something for the future.

They’re clearly taking that approach with Terry as a former first-round pick and despite his modest career averages, and it will be interesting to see if that extends to any more young players before training camp gets underway in just over a month.

The Warriors still have two main roster spots available and have been linked to a mix of veteran and young players in recent weeks, while also confirming they will have a full roster come opening night instead of leaving a spot open for tax saving purposes.
