4. Klay Thompson’s Contract Extension

One of the biggest offseason storylines was whether the Golden State Warriors would trade for Kevin Love. The former-Minnesota Timberwolves star was being offered to teams, and the Warriors were regularly touted as a favourable destination for the big man.

However, the cost was steep. The Timberwolves wanted Klay Thompson as the centrepiece of the deal, and the Warriors were unwilling to do business. The rumours dragged on until the Cleveland Cavaliers traded for him, and Thompson was finally safe from trade talks.

The Warriors’ front office then quickly began contract negotiations with Klay. It was well-reported that Klay was seeking a max-contract once he hit restricted free agency, and league opinion was split on whether he deserved such a hefty pay rise.

Then, a few hours before the contract extension deadline, the two parties agreed on a four year, $70 million contract extension. It wasn’t max money, but close enough to appease Klay, and Bay Area fans were happy that the Splash Brothers would live on.
