There is turmoil early in the locker room, as the Warriors and coach Walton struggle to click. But after a month of getting to know each other better and after a hard-fought triple-overtime victory over the San Antonio Spurs, the Warriors and coach Walton begin a turnaround. The team starts playing better under Walton, and manage to find their way to the NBA Finals, while coach Kerr is still out.
Before Game One of the Finals, as the Warriors prepare themselves in their locker room, there is a startling revelation. Coach Kerr reveals that he was never hurt in the first place, but wanted to give the team a challenge and to prevent them from being complacent in their title defense.
Stephen Curry stands up after Kerr finishes talking, and says, “We know, coach.”
The Warriors, strengthened and emboldened, win the NBA Finals.
Coach Luke Walton wins Coach of the Year.
Steve Kerr proves that he has surpassed his former mentor Gregg Popovich in the mind-games department.
