Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey had plenty of praise for the Golden State Warriors while also acknowledging that his team can compete.

The Golden State Warriors fielding an almost unbeatable team has changed the way every organization around the league views structure philosophically. There’s no meeting in the middle with a top team like Golden State running over everyone. It’s either acquire superstars or burn it to the ground and start over.

Thus far in free agency, teams have been either attempting to tear it down or go all in and acquire star players to improve their chances to take down the Warriors. The Western Conference has become even more ridiculous than it ever has been, thanks to the additions of Paul George, Jimmy Butler and Paul Millsap.

There has also been the trades as well that existing powers have made to try and catch up. The Houston Rockets went out and added Chris Paul to James Harden and they will be one of the contenders to throne in the west.

While general manager Daryl Morey has been doing quite the job assembling his team in Houston, he took time to praise the Warriors and acknowledge what is ahead with the two teams. While the Rockets were introducing P.J. Tucker (their Kevin Durant stopper they hope), Morey spoke about the Warriors and how he feels they can compete (transcribed via CSN Bay Area’s Drew Shiller) with them.

“They’re one of the best teams ever,” Morey said. “So we obviously felt like we needed to close that gap; we feel like we have closed the gap. They’re the ones with two rings in the last three years so you gotta give them respect and say, ‘Hey, they’re gonna be the favorites going in.’ “But we really feel like this is a group that can compete with them.”

What’s going to be unique this season is that with the strength of the Western Conference at an all-time high, there can be a case study about each and every contender. Houston is going to be one of those much anticipated battles the Warriors will face.

San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Minnesota, and others will make their push as well. It’s best to buckle up because every team in the league is coming after Golden State. They’ll give their respect as Morey did, but they’ll feel confident in their ability to compete as well.
