The Warriors have signed undrafted rookie Marcus Derrickson to an Exhibit 10 contract after a strong showing in this year’s Summer League.

The Warriors only had one draft pick this year, but they needed to add some young and cheap talent to a roster that is stacked with superstars.

They may have found a diamond in the rough in Marcus Derrickson.

Derrickson played three years of college ball at Georgetown where he averaged 10.3 points and 5.6 rebounds during his career, including 15.9 points and 8.1 rebounds during his final season as a Hoya.

He had an impressive 64% true shooting percentage and an above average player efficiency rating of 21.7 last year.

In my scouting report of Derrickson’s Summer League performance I suggested that Golden State should strongly consider signing him to a two-way contract. Instead they’ve brought him in with an Exhibit 10 deal, which essentially works like a two-way contract.

The Exhibit 10 clause is tacked on to a minimum contract and it guarantees the player’s bonus in his contract if he plays for the team’s G League affiliate in the case that he is waived by the NBA team.

It’s kind of confusing, but it essentially gives Derrickson a chance to make the NBA roster in training camp while allowing him to join the Santa Cruz Warriors if he doesn’t make it.

Derrickson shined in the Las Vegas Summer League this year scoring 14.3 points per game with 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per night shooting 22-for-42 from the floor. He showed some versatility throughout the Summer League schedule that reminds people of an extremely poor man’s Draymond Green.

That type of player is obviously essential in Golden State’s system, and being able to find a big man with that skillset as an undrafted free agent is a fantastic move by the front office.

I’m excited to see what Marcus Derrickson can do in training camp as the Warriors take a chance on adding another young big man.
