Ricky Rubio

The Warriors are prioritizing finding a backup point guard this offseason. While he’d be a splash addition in a trade since his contract isn’t expiring, there’s no denying Ricky Rubio would be a stellar addition for Golden State.

The Mercury News looked into the Dubs bringing in Rubio, as did NBC Sports. We’ve already looked into bringing in Rubio in a different post as well. That said, Rubio still stands as a player the Warriors should take a look at it.

On the surface level, it doesn’t make too much sense.

He’s a solid, pass-first point guard, but he’s not an elite shooter. Why would the Warriors bring in a player to backup Curry and play significantly fewer minutes than a starter if he wouldn’t perfectly complement the duo?

Well, it’s because Rubio may be an underrated fit given his unselfishness. The Spain-born 30-year-old is averaging 13.1 points and 8.9 assists per game. He is also playing alongside ball-dominant Devin Booker who is the clear leader of the Suns.

With two years left on his contract, Rubio could almost perfectly slide in for the trade exception. He can pass, and he can do it at a high level. With two of the best shooters ever on his side, Rubio’s vision would just be that much more electric with the splash bros.
