It was thrilling to watch the Golden State Warriors land the No. 2 overall NBA Draft pick but they might be better trading down in the order.

By luck of the draw, the Golden State Warriors secured the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming 2020 NBA Draft. This put the franchise in a unique position where they can select a top prospect despite already having multiple All-Stars stashed away on the roster.

Some think the Warriors should utilize this opportunity to draft an experienced talent such as Obi Toppin who can step in and help the squad compete for a title next season. Others are more interested in a longterm project like Anthony Edwards, James Wiseman or LaMelo Ball who could one day become the face of the organization.

Instead, the Dubs might be better off trading down in the draft. Swapping picks with a team further in the order allows the Warriors to accomplish two important things.

Firstly, it keeps them in the draft. While going all-out for another star is an enticing idea – there is some worth in staying in the draft and selecting a young talent to grow with the team. Drafting a player late in the first round will benefit the Dubs’ future core.

Furthermore, the Warriors will feel more comfortable selecting a sophomore or junior player late in the first round. This additional experience is more appetizing to the Dubs’ title hopes next season.

The second reason the Dubs should look to flip this draft pick is so that they can acquire more assets. Golden State is in need of depth in the frontcourt and on the perimeter. A swap with San Antonio to acquire Rudy Gay or Patty Mills could work perfectly. Other deals with Atlanta, New York and Phoenix are potentially o the table as well.

The Warriors’ best option would be to drop in the order and stack their lineup. They get the best of both worlds here – still able to select a first round prospect while adding more depth to their rotation.
