Golden State Warriors trades to land P.J. Tucker: Giving up draft capital

Rockets receive: 2021 second-round pick, Alen “Smiley” Smailagic

Warriors receive: P.J. Tucker

The Golden State Warriors have future picks, many of which they added at the 2020 NBA trade deadline. They added one second-round pick for Willie Cauley-Stein and three more for Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III.

There’s no better time to empty some of their late-draft bank than now. After all, Tucker is certainly the kind of a player that’s worth a second-round pick. He’s also worth a player in Smailagic that’s yet to break into the rotation.

“Smiley,” as he’s also known, was injured for most of his rookie season and hasn’t played much in his second season. Playing for the Warriors organization before being draft, the team knew what they were getting.

Despite having energy, Smiley is a project. Tucker is a win-now move, and it’s something the Warriors need to consider especially with the move of Kelly Oubre Jr. that shows this team wants to contend now.
