Golden State Warriors NBA Draft: Jonathan Kuminga

Jonathan Kuminga is everything you should get excited for in an upcoming NBA Draft prospect. With good size, solid ball-handling skills and elite athleticism, Kuminga has all the makings of a star.

Let’s start with his physical build. Kuminga checks in at 6’6″ but boasts a wingspan over 7-feet including a bulky frame with wide shoulders. Piece this together with his mobility and vertical leap and this is a guy who can play multiple positions at the NBA level.

His scoring is what makes him an exciting prospect. Kuminga is averaging 15.8 points on some rough shooting splits (38/24/62) but it’s important to remember he’s embarking on an unusual path to the league, opting out of college to compete against grown men in the G-League.

The truth is, Kuminga’s raw potential as a slasher who can expand his game to the 3-point is what makes him a top-five prospect. He’s comparable to LeBron James on the defensive end, in the sense that he’s always lurking and makes for a great help defender who can erase shots at the rim and dart into the passing lane for steals. Still, he has work to do before being considered a good one-on-one defender.

Kuminga has a high ceiling. Becoming a more efficient scorer would be key to his success in Golden State but his versatility is enough to carve out a comfortable role either way.
