Golden State Warriors should consider Marcus Smart

Marcus Smart is one of the hottest names on the trading block right now. Here is how the Golden State Warriors can get in on the action.

Reasons to pursue

Marcus Smart is a valuable glue guy in today’s NBA. He’s made incredible strides as a shooter, improving from a 25 percent 3-point shooter as a sophomore to roughly league-average on decent volume.

This has only helped round out Smart’s contributions. He’s already an elite perimeter defender and a pretty good playmaker. Smart can enter the Warriors and bring it all together as a tertiary distributor and defender alongside Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

Reasons to pass

Smart comes with some problems, sadly. He isn’t afraid of anything, which can actually cause some problems. I can’t count how many times Smart attempted to be a hero for the Boston Celtics only to commit a mind-numbing turnover or toss up a horrific shot.

He’s also going to cost a bit to acquire. He’s making $13 million next year, so unless the Warriors can orchestrate a sign-and-trade involving Kelly Oubre, the price to obtain Smart might be too high. I wouldn’t give up James Wiseman or too many picks for Smart.

Verdict: Pass
