Golden State Warriors: Jonathan Kuminga impressing in NBA Draft workouts
By Tony Pesta
A potential work in progress, Jonathan Kuminga has been impressing everyone in his NBA Draft workouts. Will this be enough to pique the Golden State Warriors‘ interest? Or will it cause him to be taken before they are up to select?
The Golden State Warriors will need to keep an eye on Jonathan Kuminga after his impressing NBA Draft workouts.
Kuminga is one of the more controversial prospects in an otherwise ‘can’t miss’ draft. Everyone seems sure that Cade Cunningham, Jalen Green, Evan Mobley and Jalen Suggs are the consensus top four — but after that, things get a bit blurry. Other than Kuminga, names such as Davion Mitchell, Scottie Barnes, Jalen Johnson, Moses Moody, Keon Johnson and Corey Kispert have all been mentioned as potential top-five picks.
Of this bunch, the Warriors should have the least amount of interest in Kuminga as his limitations as a shooter are concerning for a team already struggling to space the floor in the frontcourt. However, if recent reports are true, Kuminga might be worth the risk.
He apparently shined in his workout with the Cleveland Cavaliers, though it’s highly unlikely the Cavs actually select him third overall. According to Sam Amico, Kuminga shot the ball well during the combine and performed strongly in his workouts with Cleveland.
Kuminga is a 6’8″ forward with athleticism and ball-handling abilities. He’s a gifted slasher with promise as a playmaker and defender. However, his ceiling will be restricted if he can’t develop into a better shooter. Kuminga shot just 16-of-65 (24.6%) from the 3-point line in the G-League.
At only 18 years of age, there’s still hope he will blossom into a threat from deep. This could make Kuminga a hyper versatile forward who fits exactly what the Warriors need on the wing. Of course, there’s still a high likelihood that Kuminga needs some time to reach that point. Meaning, the Dubs might be best suited looking elsewhere in the draft.
Regardless, the potential Kuminga is flashing will make it an interesting night for Golden State if he drops to No. 7. What do you think the Warriors should do?
