Golden State Warriors: Kerr envisions Jonathan Kuminga as a four
By Tony Pesta
It did not take long for Steve Kerr to realize Jonathan Kuminga’s best fit with the Golden State Warriors. From the start of training camp, Kerr has been envisioning Kuminga as a small-ball four.
The Golden State Warriors are thrilled to see what Jonathan Kuminga can accomplish at the four with his versatile skillset.
Training camp is in full swing for the Warriors and while key members of the team like Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins, Klay Thompson and James Wiseman have not been able to fully compete for varying reasons — the rookie Kuminga has had an opportunity to get his feet wet.
His introduction to the NBA will be a swift one. With uncertainty around Wiggins‘ status for the season, Kuminga might have to take on a bigger role than expected early on. Exactly what that role will be is up to Kerr, who appears to see a clear fit for Kuminga in the frontcourt.
"“Right away, immediately, he looks like a four because of his power and strength in his body, and ability to guard multiple positions. I think the easiest way for him to make an impact would be as a four, in terms of limiting what he has to do offensively with decision-making, being a dive man, a roll man, a [dribble hand-off] guy, and then being great defensively.”Via Twitter"
This sounds about right. Standing at 6’7″ with broad shoulders, fluid hips and clean agility, Kuminga is a natural fit in today’s NBA. His qualities as a slasher make him an ideal dive man and his wide frame will allow Kuminga to set some bone-crushing screens when handing off the ball.
More importantly, Kuminga can evolve into one hell of a defender. He has the knack to guard multiple positions and be used in a multitude of ways. He can anchor the defense as a stopgap in the paint or act as a disruptor on the perimeter by using his length to intercept passing lanes.
The teenager is sure to get loads of advice from his veteran teammates throughout the next few weeks. Soaking up that information and learning how to best replicate the likes of Andre Iguodala and Draymond Green will allow Kuminga to fulfill his role.
Playing alongside Stephen Curry is a surefire way to succeed on offense. Kuminga’s job will be simplified as he sets screens, roll hard to the hoop and make the correct passes.
Kuminga has a great path to success by being a small-ball four with the Warriors and can lead the next generation of death lineups to come.
