The Golden State Warriors may have to open the bank for former first-round pick Jordan Poole.

Poole erupted onto the scene at the right time and is set for a contract extension this offseason. Whether the two sides agree on a value for his future or not is still up in the air, but it’s reported the extension could top nine figures.

While the Golden State Warriors have several max contracts on the books, they may have to find the cap space to give Jordan Poole a nine-figure extension.

If Poole is awarded a four-year, $100 million extension, it should be a win-win situation as he’s one of the league’s most promising players. His upside offensively is almost unmatched as his bag of tricks is almost as deep as any other player in the league.

Poole’s continued desire to improve is what Golden State should have faith in. He was almost single-handily responsible for the Warriors not slipping further in the Western Conference rankings this past season as Stephen Curry missed the last several weeks.

The third-year guard averaged 18.5 points per game and shot a league-best 92.5% from the free-throw line. He improved both his field goal percentage and three-point shooting over the last two seasons.

Efficiency was a huge concern for Poole following a poor showing as a rookie.

Going from a late first-round pick and being asked to play heavy minutes on a franchise coming off five straight NBA Finals appearances is not easy, and Poole’s rebounded well from that season. He’s seen almost a 65% year-over-year scoring uptick in each of his three seasons.

Averaging around 22-24 points per game is where he needs to set his sights for next season, and he’ll have everything to prove if he doesn’t get awarded that extension. Poole is set to play the 2022-23 season on a team option worth $3.9 million.

The $100 million for four years wouldn’t quite be a max-level deal for the 22-year-old guard, and he hasn’t quite shown enough to warrant that, especially as his minutes were cut given his lacking defensive play.

Even if he could get that max deal elsewhere, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him not take a small discount to stay in the Bay Area.
