Warriors: Six Summer League storylines to keep an eye on
2. Is Kuminga more than a highlight reel?
Golden State’s number seven pick in the 2021 draft, Jonathan Kuminga, had an exciting rookie season full of explosive flashes that displayed his enormous potential.
Now preparing for his second season, the 19-year-old needs to add consistency to become a productive NBA player that Steve Kerr can turn to for stretches during the playoffs.
While Summer League is just the start of that process, it’ll be interesting to view and evaluate Kuminga as the most talented player on the team, as the likely star of the show rather than an ancillary piece to the Warriors championship core.
Ideally, he should prove himself way too good for this level, with the hopeful dominance retaining within a team construct where the Warriors are far superior with him on the floor.
1. Where is James Wiseman at?
It’s hard to set expectations for Wiseman given he didn’t play in a single NBA game last season. Most simply want to see him out there, especially with how slow the progression has been since a torn meniscus in April 2021.
In positive news, Wiseman has progressed to 5-on-5 scrimmaging. According to The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II, he “looked pretty good” during a scrimmage on Thursday.
Reports suggest Wiseman won’t play in the first game of Summer League, but that a return is on the cards at some point during the tournament.
Even coming off an injury, his sheer size and athleticism should see him be an imposing presence on both ends once his opportunity arises.
