Golden State Warriors: Pros and cons of maxing Draymond Green
By Tony Pesta
Cons
Draymond Green has earned the right to demand a max contract but can the Golden State Warriors afford the price?
Age is a factor
Age is more than just a number.
You can only expect so much from an aging star and it doesn’t make it any easier when the star in question has no jump shot to fall back on.
It’s the NBA’s worst-kept secret that 3-point shooting is paramount nowadays. If you can’t shoot the rock, you better be really good at something else.
Fortunately, Green is arguably the best defender in the world and a top-tier playmaker. As he enters his mid-30s, how much of this will remain true?
Potential fall out
The potential for this deal to backfire is immense. What happens if Green’s production dives off a cliff in two years? How would the Dubs retool a roster that is already strapped for cash if they have an aging vet making max money?
And still, the fallout of losing Green could be even worse. How would Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson feel if the Warriors lowballed their longtime partner?
Whatever the cost may be, the Dubs should bring back Green.
