Golden State Warriors’ Moses Moody breaks free in G League return
Moses Moody may have had limited opportunities with the Golden State Warriors in recent times, but the 20-year-old broke free with 26 shot attempts in his return to the NBA G League for Santa Cruz on Friday.
The second-year wing was assigned to the Warriors’ G League affiliate on Thursday, along with rookies Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Ryan Rollins. Moody spent no time spreading his wings with a game-high 26 points, enjoying the chance to take on a primary role.
Golden State Warriors’ Moses Moody led Santa Cruz to a hard-fought 119-117 win over the South Bay Lakers at UCLA Health Training Center on Friday.
It was hardly the most efficient performance from Moody — his 26 points came on 9-for-26 shooting from the field and 3-for-10 from three-point range. He also had seven rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block, finishing the game a +6 in plus-minus.
The inefficiency is manageable early, it’s all part of shaking off the rust and allowing Moody to play freely without the threat of consequence — he played 35 minutes, seven more than any other teammate.
After leading by 11 at half-time, the Warriors needed a three-point game-winner from Jordan Schakel with 3.2 seconds left to stave off the Lakers’ fourth-quarter surge. The 24-year-old wing was somewhat controversially acquired for center Trevion Williams in a January 11 trade with the Capital City Go Go.
Baldwin’s impressive shooting with Golden State hasn’t immediately translated back to the G League, with last year’s 28th overall pick going just 5-for-17 from the field and 2-for-10 from three-point range for 12 points in 26 minutes. Rollins came off the bench for Santa Cruz but contributed 18 points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals in 24 minutes.
How long Moody remains in the G League is yet to be determined, but assuming Golden State remains relatively healthy over the coming weeks, one can expect he may get an extended period to develop his game with Santa Cruz.
