A lot of Golden State Warriors fans were hoping that the team would be able to reunite with Klay Thompson, either at some point this upcoming season or next offseason when he was set to be a free agent.
Well, that dream seems to have disappeared after Thompson got out of his contract with the Mavericks and signed a two-year deal with the Miami Heat. That has put a pause on the dream of a reunification with the Warriors for now, but there’s still a chance Thompson could return to Golden State for a storybook finish to his career.
Thompson seemingly opened the door to that earlier in the offseason while signing autographs for fans. He said, “Never say never,” so unless he was just being nice, there is still a part of him that would be on board with returning to the Warriors even if things didn’t end in great fashion
A lot has to go right for Warriors to get the band back together
A lot of this will depend on Stephen Curry. He is eligible for a contract extension and if he decides to sign for two years, that means he will be under contract through the 2028-29 campaign. Thompson will be a free agent prior to that year, meaning he could sign with Golden State and get one more year with Curry.
Then the question becomes whether Draymond Green and Steve Kerr would still be in the picture at that point. Green is only under contract through this upcoming season and there’s a decent chance that he will end up getting moved in a trade/
Kerr signed a two-year deal and it doesn’t really seem like he will want to come back beyond that, leaving a good chance the Warriors will have a new coach at that point. Golden State may not want to start that coach’s tenure with a big nostalgia trip.
But perhaps Green stays put and Kerr ends up deciding to go one more season. If they could reassemble the Steph-Klay-Dray combo, then Kerr would have to finish it out with those guys so they could all take a bow and retire together, arm in arm.
This Warriors dynasty deserves that, but it may not work out quite that way. Perhaps if Golden State was still competitive they would be afforded that storybook ending, but with the team seemingly stuck in a rut of mediocrity, they may decide to start moving towards the future rather than prioritizing the past.
A reunion isn’t impossible for Thompson and the Warriors. It may not seem very likely at this stage, but things can change and he may still end up in blue and gold again one day.
