The Golden State Warriors may as well put a halt on any fanciful dream of landing Nikola Jokic next offseason, with the Denver Nuggets superstar publicly declaring that he'll be re-signing come free agency.
The Warriors still have the potential to hold max cap space after Stephen Curry's contract extension on Friday, and Jokic sits atop the board of possible free agents given the three-time MVP holds a $62.9 million player option for the 2027-28 season.

Jokic has yet to sign an extension with the Nuggets and there has been some speculation over his future after a first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves, followed by the front office dealing away rising young forward Peyton Watson to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a sign-and-trade.
But Jokic eased any concern for Denver fans at media day, stating, "I'm going to sign next year." Sure, players have said this before and gone back on their word, and circumstances can always change as they did with Kyrie Irving in Boston last decade. But this is also a homegrown superstar entering his 12th year in the league, and there's very little reason not to take Jokic at his word.
There's every reason to believe the 31-year-old when there's a simple explanation as to why he's waiting until free agency. By not signing an extension now and completing it next year, Jokic can sign the maximum amount possible which will equate to five years and nearly $360 million.
Things would have to collapse in an almighty matter for Jokic to change his stance. That collapse would likely be something in the realms of the Nuggets missing the playoffs -- an outcome that appears highly unlikely given their still very talented roster and the fact they've made the playoffs in each of the past eight seasons.
Warriors' free agency options are already dwindling away
Unless they trade veterans Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green and/or Kristaps Porzingis for longer term money before February's mid-season deadline, the Warriors will enter next summer with the chance to drastically change their roster and retool for one last championship push with Curry.
The problem with that is we're nine months away from free agency and some of the best options are already off the board. Jokic has publicly declared he's remaining in Denver, while many of the notable young players from the 2023 draft class have already turned their backs on restricted free agency.
It leaves the real possibility that the Warriors have cap space but an underwhelming pool of players in which to use it on, with the wish of a stunning Jokic signing washing away before the season even begins.
