The Golden State Warriors, in a certain sense, are lined up for a 'gap year'.
They opted to essentially run their roster back this offseason— re-siginging Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, Draymond Green, De'Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II. With both Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody out until at least mid-season, the downside for this team is extremely real.
While there's always a chance they could make a push in the Play-In Tournament and find some moderate playoff success with Butler back at full strength, the plan for the front office has to be to maximize the flexibility they have next offseason and try to field one final contending roster around Stephen Curry.
Even if expectations are low this season, though, that doesn't mean the pressure is off. Curry will become eligible for a two-year, $136.7 million extension on Aug. 29. The Warriors' brass have projected nothing but confidence that Curry will sign it when it's offered.
But if Golden State wants to justify Curry's faith in their ongoing plan, the Warriors' young pieces— most notably Lendeborg— will have to show signs of major advancement this season. That's about the most positive development Warriors fans can expect, and that puts the pressure on Lendeborg to put the hopes of the franchise as a whole, in some ways, upon his own shoulders.
Yaxel Lendeborg needs to be a source of hope for the Warriors (and Stephen Curry) in 2026-27
Part of the reason the Warriors selected Lendeborg in the first place, even as he enter his rookie season at the age of 24, was likely because they thought he could make an immediate impact on a roster that desperately needed it. Not only is he physically mature, but his two-way game is relatively polished. He's not only a physical scorer, but he's also a highly agile and versatile defender.
It's not yet clear what his long-term room for development looks like. But in the short-term, he seems to be among the rare class of rookies who can come in and start right away for a semi-competitive team.
But the Warriors need more out of Lendeborg than short-term floor raising efforts. He was the highest selection they've made since the fateful Jonathan Kuminga pick in 2021. They need him to show signs, at the very least, of being a valuable long-term player for the organization.
Golden State's future outlook isn't entirely grim, but it is very uncertain. The Warriors are projected to be a cap-space team next offseason when Butler and Green's current contracts come off the books. Free agency isn't what it used to be, though, and it remains to be seen how radically the team can overturn their roster simply with cap space at their disposal.
Curry's decision on an extension doesn't hinge on Lendeborg. But if the Warriors are going to find a way to become a serious playoff team before the end of Curry's career, the rookie almost certainly has a large part to play in that.
If he's able to show major development this season, becoming more comfortable as a perimeter shooter and a connecting passer, that will go a long way toward easing fans' concerns about Curry's and the organization's future— even if that's not an entirely fair expectation to place upon Lendeborg.
