The Referees

Worry Level: Moderate

Although I know exactly which officials are qualified on paper to ref the Western Conference Finals, I have to admit I absolutely shuddered when I saw Tony Brothers’ name at the very top of the list.

Of course, that’s to be expected when you’re naming referees in alphabetical order by last name, but still! I wouldn’t be surprised if the NBA did that on purpose as some kind of cruel prank.

Good one, Kiki VanDeWeghe. I’m on to you.

In all seriousness, the way the Western Conference Finals will be officiated is quite possibly a top-3 concern of mine. I’d go as far to predict the Rockets probably win a game or two based on the officiating alone.

We all know James Harden lives at the free throw line. During the regular season, he ranked third in personal fouls drawn per game (7.0) and led the league in free throw attempts per game (10.1). In the playoffs, he currently ranks ninth in personal fouls drawn (5.6) and third in free throw attempts (8.1).

Then there’s Chris Paul, who’s also a notorious flopper, and Trevor Arizona isn’t exactly innocent of baiting Warriors players. I’d be surprised if Mike D’Antoni doesn’t tell his team to play overly physical the entire series.
