Scoring

Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson combined to average over 45 points per game this past season. They were two of the most impactful players not just on the Warriors but in the entire NBA as well.

More from Blue Man Hoop

With both of them out, Durant all next season and Thompson till at least the All-Star break, the Warriors will need to give their roster a boost in scoring. That boost can come in the form of former 2007 All-Rookie first team member Rudy Gay.

Gay averaged 13.7 points per game last season and is just half a decade removed from his best professional season. That doesn’t sound like a player that’d come in and give Golden State what it needs to win.

Right? Injury-prone and on a downhill spiral, he’s the one that supposed to help Golden State reclaim the throne?

That being said, if you consider that he played just 27 minutes per game with the Spurs during the 2018-2019 season, that number looks far better. He put up just under 20 points per 36 minutes. Gay also played in 69 games, the most he’s played since the 2015-2016 season.

That scoring would help the Warriors stay competitive, but they’re many other reasons Gay is the quintessential signing.
