Contract

The Golden State Warriors are in a unique cap situation. They don’t have much money to spend, but they do have a $9.3 million disabled player exception that they were granted because of Klay Thompson’s injury.

That’s what Golden State needs to use to add Griffin. What I meant about the buyout being shocking to open was that Griffin still had over $70 million on his contract. He signed a five-year deal worth $173 million back in 2017.

Now an unrestricted free agent, his market has the potential to still be in the eight figures, but it seems likely he’ll sign small and play for a chance to win a title. That’s where Golden State may be at a disadvantage.

The near $10 million they can pay him may not stand much of a chance against what the Nets can offer him in postseason potential.

It is, however, a good deal and should at least draw his attention if the Warriors are looking to spend to continue showing Stephen Curry they believe he can single-handedly carry this team to a championship.
