Golden State Warriors: A 5-step plan to success in 2020 offseason
Win the draft lottery
This is really the only one the Warriors have no control over.
Unless they trade the pick, the Warriors will be drafting in the lottery for the first time since they selected Harrison Barnes seventh overall in the 2012 NBA Draft. They had drafted in the lottery from 2008-2012, snagging superstars Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry during that stretch.
In said lottery, they’ll have the top odds for the No. 1 overall pick. They’ll share those odds with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers. Those three combine to make the three worst teams record-wise in the association.
While it’s random, it would be huge for the Warriors to win the draft. Their mere 15 wins are the worst in the league, but with the lottery meant to reduce tanking, it really won’t matter. The Warriors will enter the lottery with a 14% of snagging the No. 1 overall pick.
The Warriors have a 40% shot at a top-three pick and are guaranteed a top-five pick. The NBA Draft lottery was typically in May and has been updated, now tentatively scheduled for August 25, 2020.
