Golden State Warriors: Start James Wiseman

It’s something that’s bound to happen at some point, right? I mean, if the Golden State Warriors’ No. 2 NBA Draft pick isn’t able to play at the starting center position… something went disastrously wrong.

That hasn’t been the case so far for James Wiseman. It’s not that he was floundering around hopelessly as a starter – but Steve Kerr and the front office felt it would be better to shift his role and allow him to more comfortably adjust to the professional level as a member of the second unit. And, for the first few weeks, this shift has worked.

Wiseman averaged 11.8 points and 5.1 rebounds during his brief time on the bench. He was pushed back into the starting lineup for the final game before the break as the Dubs chose to rest both Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. He posted 11 points and 11 rebounds in this game, his second double-double of the year.

There’s no way for Wiseman to truly develop into the star center we want him to become if he isn’t being challenged. He’s talented enough to face off against starting units and his game will only benefit from playing alongside Curry and Green. It’s time to throw the rookie into the fire and see if he can walk through the flames.
