It’s been months since trade rumors erupted about the Golden State Warriors and a potential Kevin Love deal, and as of this day, no trade has been made.
The issue for the Warriors, which is well-known by now, is that they are unwilling to include Klay Thompson in a trade for Love, while the Timberwolves are asking for Thompson to be put in any offer. This impasse has allowed for other teams to jump into the trade talks, and now it appears the Cleveland Cavaliers, rejuvenated with the addition to LeBron James, are the favorites.
Numerous reports have suggested that the Cavaliers are willing to part with first overall pick Andrew Wiggins in a deal for Love. And while Minnesota clearly covets Thompson, ESPN reports that Wolves’ owner Glen Taylor now prefers Wiggins to Thompson. Obviously there would be other players and assets included to either offer, but Wiggins or Thompson would be the centerpiece of a deal.
This further signifies that the Warriors are falling out of the lead for Love. Before the Cavaliers jumped in, the Warriors could have acquired Love if they put in Thompson, but now, there is no guarantee they would even get Love if they put Thompson on the table.
The ESPN report states that the Cavaliers are confident they can land Love, as evidenced by their recent trade to clear up cap space. Meanwhile, the Warriors are stuck in limbo, wanting to acquire a star player but unwilling to say goodbye to one of their core players.
