Marreese Speights may have celebrated a little too hard on his birthday.
Speights was arrested early Tuesday morning in Tampa, Florida for a DUI, according to the Bay Area News Group. It was the morning after his 27th birthday, and Speights was arrested at 3:31 AM.
According to the report, Speights was driving a black 2012 Bentley, and was pulled over after failing to yield while backing out of a driveway. Speights was reportedly cooperative with the officer, but was nonetheless booked and released on $500 bond.
It’s an unfortunate turn of events for the Warriors’ big man, who is hoping to rebound after a disappointing first year with his new team. Speights signed a three-year, $11 million contract with the Warriors as a free agent before last season with management hoping that he would replicate the production of Carl Landry.
But Speights was rather sluggish, threw up ill-advised shots, and found himself losing minutes to Jermaine O’Neal. He averaged 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds in 79 games last season.
“Last year, I really started (offseason conditioning) late,” Speights told the San Jose Mercury News earlier this offseason. “That was my fault, so I feel like this summer I just know every day I can do a little something to keep me in game shape. I feel pretty good, but I still can improve more.”
He’ll now have to deal with a DUI before worrying about basketball. In a statement, the Warriors said they are aware of the charges against Speights but would not comment on the situation.
