David Blatt Leaving For NBA, Warriors In Mix

One of Steve Kerr’s top targets to join his coaching staff on Golden State Warriors is Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt — make that former Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt.

Blatt announced on Thursday that he is leaving Europe to coach in the NBA; however, his next team is uncertain. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reports that he is in talks not only with the Warriors, but also with the Cleveland Cavaliers for their head coaching position. The Timberwolves also want Blatt on their staff, but he is focused primarily on the Warriors and Cavaliers. It is uncertain how long the Warriors will wait for the Cavaliers to decide on Blatt. Blatt is willing to take an assistant coaching position in the NBA, but that could just be leverage in dealing with the Cavaliers.

Blatt, one of the most successful coaches in European basketball history, spent 13 seasons playing in Europe and the last 21 years coaching. He won the Euroleague championship this past season with Maccabi Tel Aviv, and has won the Israeli League Coach of the Year award three times. Blatt also coached the Russia national team during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, leading them to a bronze medal.
